This weeks Senior Sunday post focus’ on Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue in Lodi, CA.
Note: The Thulani Program rescues abandoned and terminally ill or very old German shepherd dogs from California and Nevada, and finds them permanent or adoptive foster homes.
From the Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue website
The Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) is a rescue that focuses on helping German Shepherds with limited life expectancy, typically measured in months or possibly as much as a year, due to terminal illnesses or simply old age. Medical condition is not a restriction as long as the dog has some quality life left to it, no matter how short that time may be.
Thulani has evolved since 2009 (Our History) from helping a few dogs each year during the first few year, to one in which we help about 70 new dogs each year. We started by servicing animal shelters primarily in the greater San Francisco Bay region, but our responsibilities have expanded to include all of California and Nevada (Our Area). This expansion has been driven primarily by the widespread need for the types of services that Thulani provides, and by the general lack of other organizations able to provide these services. Our goal is to save 100 dogs annually, a number we estimate will be necessary to prevent any Thulani-qualified GSD from dying prematurely in a shelter.
* To rescue terminally ill German Shepherds from immediate life threatening situations at animal shelters or from other circumstances in which the dog is in immediate danger
* To provide immediate medical, physical, and living-situation support in order to re-establish a quality existence for the dog
* To provide a permanent family home for the dog in which it can live out its natural life in a warm and loving environment for as much quality life as it has left. This home is effectively a hospice sanctuary for the German Shepherd.
Seniors have a lot to teach, we just need to be willing to watch, listen, and learn… (Divinity’s Dad, 2012)
Here are some, but not all of the senior dogs currently available for adoption from the Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue.
Brandy T. is a 12-year old female German Shepherd long-coat who was owner surrendered to the LA County shelter. When she arrived, Brandy showed signs of neglect that included matted fur and needed medical attention.
Brandy is a lovely girl and, while a bit stiff, she is still quite mobile. Her rear end is weak, but with some gentle exercise and pain medication we think she will regain much of her younger mobility.

Rocko T. is a handsome 10-year old male German Shepherd mix with a Black/White/Grey coat which was owner surrendered to the SEAACA shelter in Downey Calif (Southern Calif). Rocko was also left with Macy T.
Like Rocko, Macy is also a 10-year old German Shepherd mix and both dogs have been rescued by TSGSR.

Babe T. is a 12-year old female German Shepherd – Malinois mix that is energetic and happy. Babe is just a sweetheart.
Babe entered the TSGSR program from the Solano County Shelter where she was owner surrendered. Babe is very friendly to dogs and people but does not interact well with cats.

Rockee T. is a 10-year old male German Shepherd Dog (GSD) that was owner surrendered to the Downey LA County Shelter in S. Cal. Rockee’s former owners claimed he was sick and they did not want to pay to take him to a veterinarian. For a case like this the shelter would normally be Rockee’s final resting place.
Thankfully, due to many vigilant animal advocates, and the Miracle GSD Network, the shelter was NOT the last stop for Rockee. Due to their efforts and the Thulani Senior GSR (TSGSR) Rockee has been rescued from the Shelter and will have a chance to find a loving adoptive home.

Macy T. is a 10-year old female German Shepherd mix that was owner surrendered to the SEAACA shelter in Downey Calif (Southern Calif). On that day Macy’s owner left another dog at the shelter named Rocko T. Like Macy, Rocko is also a 10-year old German Shepherd mix and both dogs have been rescued by TSGSR.

Tazmo T. is a 10-year old friendly and active male German Shepherd that was surrendered to the Stanislaus County Shelter by his prior owners. Poor Tazmo was a little lonely at the shelter and a bit confused why his prior owners left him behind. BTW… he says his friends just call him Taz.
