Senior Sunday – Big Fluffy Dog Rescue

This weeks Senior Sunday post focus’ on the Big Fluffy Dog Rescue headquartered in Nashville, T.N.

Big Fluffy Dog Rescue

From the Big Fluffy Dog Rescue website

The Big Fluffy Dog Rescue is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping giant breed mixed breed dogs in need. We value dogs of all breeds, but we specialize in what the name says: big, fluffy dogs. We have volunteers from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico to Canada who work to help homeless big fluffy dogs find a home to call their own. Big Fluffy Dog Rescue works to save Great Pyrenees, Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands and their mixes from euthanasia. We also have a fair assortment of honorary fluffies who don’t fall into the traditional fluffy mold but are with us anyway and we love their tiny/non-fluffy selves as much as the others.

Our dogs come in to rescue for many different reasons. Many were abandoned at high kill shelters. Some were turned in by owners who could not properly care for them and still others are failed livestock guardian dogs. Regardless of their origins, our goal for every dog we have is the same: a safe, happy home where each dog is a well-loved member of the family.

Seniors have a lot to teach, we just need to be willing to watch, listen, and learn… (Divinity’s Dad, 2012)

Here are some, but not all of the senior dogs currently available for adoption from the Big Fluffy Dog Rescue.

Finna

Finna

Finna is an 8-10 year old, 85-pound Husky/Golden Shepherd mix. Finna is a lovely, quiet and calm dog who is exceedingly easy going. Given her status as an older dog, she can be a bit grumpy with new dogs in her space, but she is living with three other dogs without problem as once she gets to know them she does well. Finna would definitely NOT like dogs that are in her face or high energy so if your house is home to spider monkeys on crack in the form of running, jumping dogs, this is not your dog. Finna is fine with cats and has been living with several.

Finna would do well in a low key home with people that are home more often than not. She is a homebody who prefers her people be the same. She is low energy and her jaunts are limited to slow ambles around the neighborhood or maybe just a trip outside to potty and then laying in the grass with her nose in the wind and the sun on her back. Finna would be fine with kids 10-and up or well past the screeching years. Finna has impeccable manners in the house and on a leash.

Bob

Bob

For all of you out there who need a little bit of chill in your lives., we have a dog solution for you. Bob is a very distinguished hound mix who is about 10-years old and 50-pounds. Bob has zero natural enemies and he loves everyone and everything – kids, cats and dogs, – although he prefers the less bouncy type of all of the above. Bob is good for a few short walks a day, and lots of snooze time on the couch. If he were any more laid back, we’d have to check for a pulse. Bob also has impeccable house manners, and is a dream on a leash. Don’t you think asking for more in a dog is just being greedy?

Chelsea

Chelsea

Chelsea is a Collie/Great Pyrenees mix weighing in at 82-pounds and is the Lebowski of the dog world – she just wants to lay on a rug that really pulls the whole room together. She is fine with adults and she is great with cats. Chelsea tolerates dogs until she doesn’t, so she needs to be the Queen of her castle. She is looking for an adult only home (teenagers will be tolerated as long as they don’t push her boundaries) that appreciates a mellow dog. Chelsea is affectionate and cuddly, on her terms, and doesn’t appreciate being man-handled. She is a distinguished lady, so of course she is housebroken and has impeccable house manners.

Chelsea appreciates a good amble around the block and the occasional romp around the back yard. When the mood strikes her, she even enjoys playing fetch. Chelsea would make the perfect companion for someone who has to work a full day, and wants to come home to adoring gazes from soft, brown eyes and lazy tail wags from a luxuriously fluffy tail.

If you have a spot in your home and your heart where a senior dog can live out her golden years in peace and comfort, Chelsea is your girl.

Georgia

Georgia

Georgia is an 8-year old, 55-pound Black Lab. She came to us from a shelter in Louisiana where she rode out Hurricane Harvey. Georgia had been in the shelter for a few weeks before the storm and we took her to make room for displaced dogs.

Despite her senior status, this is a lab that does not realize she is a senior and should be dignified. Georgia is playful and active and very social. She is great with people of all ages and she is great with other dogs. She is not so good with cats.

Georgia walks well on a leash, she is well-mannered and rides well in the car. I suspect she would love to go hiking and swimming and she would do well with pretty much any family. This is a pretty much perfect dog.

Bobo

Bobo

Bobo is an 8-year old, 120-pound Saint Bernard. Bobo came to us critically ill from heartworm disease. We weren’t sure he would survive, but our vets and our kennel staff rock and after many months, he was pronounced well. He also had to have eye surgery to fix a standard entropion issue where his eyelid rolled inward (common in Saints), and that is all fixed. The vets have cleared him to go home.

As you can see in his video, Bobo is a smart boy who knows a lot of commands. Even though he is 8-years old, do not make the mistake of thinking him slow and plodding. This dog is active and a serious athlete who needs exercise. He is healthy, happy and social with his people. We’d like to see him a home with kids over 12 (he’s rambunctious even at 8), no cats (sorry) and as the only dog because he’s just happier that way.

Bobo needs an owner who understands Saints. If your understanding of St Bernard’s was formed by Beethoven, this is not your dog. We have other Saints you could consider, but this boy needs someone who gets the breed. He is a wonderful, sweet soul who loves his people and wants to make them happy in his own dorky way.

Katie

Katie

Katie is an 8/11-year old Southern Belle, who is sweet, has a winning smile and knows how to charm other dogs.

Katie is NOT a fan of cats or small animals that are “aloof or leave hair everywhere”.  Katie is a well mannered, gal who knows how to pour on the charm. She greets everyone with Darlin’ or Shugah…..

Hooper

Hooper

Hooper is an 11-year old, 53-pound Black Lab mix who was an owner surrender due to no fault of his own. Hooper is the trifecta of all dogs and is good with kids, cats, and other dogs, However, he would prefer kids that are on the calmer side. Hooper is crate and potty trained.

This awesome boy is sweet, independent, and reliable. His favorite past-times are hanging out on his bed, getting cuddles, and snacks. Hooper is the quintessential older gentleman and a dream on the leash. He is a little bit shy at first, but once he warms up to you, he will be your best friend. Hooper knows sit, come, shake, down, “go to bed” and “do your business.”

The best fit for this boy will be a patient and kind family looking to give an older gentleman a comfy retirement home.

Tasha

Tasha

Tasha is a 10-year old, 55-pound golden scruffy mix. She is an imperious old lady and she has some specific needs. Tasha was left at the shelter by her people and she hasn’t handled it all that well, and we would like to find her people who suck less.

  • Tasha needs a home where she is the only. She has zero need to hang with the masses. She can be OK with dog savvy cats, but she looks at them like I look at chocolate truffles, so fair warning.
  • She needs someone willing to install a dog door with a fenced yard. She loves to go in and out at will.
  • You must love hanging out with your dog. She hopes you are a binge watcher of Netflix and she will cheerfully hang out with you.
  • Occasional walks are golden.
  • Snacks are non-negotiable.
  • Kids over 12 please, she is an old lady and she does not appreciate the antics of screaming kids.
  • Tasha is housebroken, calm, very well-mannered and extremely easy if she has the right set up.

Hazel

Hazel

Hazel is a true grand dame; a dignified 11-year old 50-lb Shepherd-Terrier mix who is looking for a forever home with a suitable and cozy couch (read: throne) for her to spend her days sprawled across. Hazel loves to see what the world has to offer her, and especially loves to go for rides in her chariot. Hazel can be a little reserved when she meets new people. She seems to warm up a little faster with the ladies, but does come around with the gents as well. Once she is comfortable, Hazel is an affectionate girl who loves cuddles and belly rubs.

Hazel has done well with the children she’s met, happily accepting pets from all. She is good with other dogs and unknown cats (although there’s one cat in her neighborhood that she did express interest in chasing…). Hazel does well on the leash, and adores her walks. A true lady, she is house trained and entirely trustworthy when left unsupervised with free reign of the house. Hazel is food motivated, and is fully aware on the treasure that the refrigerator holds within. Hazel is low energy, and is sated with a daily walk and light romp in the yard.

Hazel is adoptable in the Mid-Atlantic/Southeast (FL, GA, NC, SC, VA, WV).

Senior Sunday – Florida Poodle Rescue

This weeks Senior Sunday post focus’ on the Florida Poodle Rescue in St. Petersburg, Florida

Florida Poodle Rescue

From the Florida Poodle Rescue website

Florida Poodle Rescue, Inc. (FPR) was founded in 1994 by Patricia Bonati and Martha Harrington. Florida Poodle Rescue has rescued, fostered and placed more than 9,000 abandoned, abused, or unwanted Standard, Miniature, and Toy Poodles.

Donations support rescue operations, foster home care, rehab & permanent adoptions.

As a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, Florida Poodle Rescue, Inc. is wholly dependent on private donations to fund our day-to-day operations in rescuing, fostering & permanently placing abused, abandoned and unwanted Toy Poodles, Miniature Poodles & Standard Poodles.
Why we need your help today.

Today’s Florida Poodle Rescue operational needs are both greater, and different, than when we first began more than almost twenty two years ago in 1994.

We rescue, foster, rehabilitate and permanently place more poodles in caring adopted homes than ever before. The cost of veterinary medical care, medicines and behavioral rehabilitation care is constantly rising.

Many rescued abused, abandoned and unwanted poodles have special physical, medical or behavioral needs requiring increased amounts of veterinary care or rehabilitation care, often translating into increased interim foster home care, prior to being placed in a permanent home of a loving family.

Seniors have a lot to teach, we just need to be willing to watch, listen, and learn… (Divinity’s Dad, 2012)

Here are some, but not all of the senior dogs currently available for adoption from the Florida Poodle Rescue.

Angle

Angle

Angel was found wandering on the grounds of Tampa International Airport. No one ever claimed her, so Florida Poodle Rescue stepped in and promised to find her a forever home. Angel was an unkempt mess when she was found, and her teeth were in poor shape, so her age was estimated at 10 to 12-years old, but she may actually be younger.

Angel will need someone who can take her out every four hours or so, but she is also trained to use pee pads. Good with grooming, and leash trained, she was obviously someone’s baby at one time. Cataracts have stolen much of Angel’s sight, but she easily learned her way around her foster home, and she has no trouble navigating her world. Although she has some hearing loss, Angel seems to understand what her foster mom wants her to do. She also understands the language of love, and is happy to be petted whenever you have a moment. She gets along well with humans of all ages as well as other dogs and even cats.

Our Angel is eager to be part of a family once again, and love and be loved as she is meant to be.

Sienna

Sienna

Sienna is a Miniature  and is 10-yearrs old. Sienna just came in and is being evaluated by her foster mom. Stay tuned for updates.

KD

KD

A sweet little girl, KD came to Florida Poodle Rescue from a breeder who went out of business. She is a tiny girl and is estimated to be between 6 and 10-years old.

KD was so lonely, anxious and afraid when she arrived at her foster home that she felt the need to constantly carry something in her mouth, preferably a toy. She has become much more relaxed under the loving care of her foster family, and although she still loves her toys and likes to have them with her, she can now walk around without one in her mouth. While her foster mom is happy that KD has become more secure, she noted that this has translated into her toys being spread out all over the house!

Very smart and a good communicator, KD lets her foster family know what she wants. She loves to cuddle with her humans, and enjoys being carried around. KD likes all the attention to be on her, though, so she needs a home without other pets, and without children.

Do you have room in your heart for this sweet girl? Can you provide her with the security and love she craves?

Princess

Princess

Princess is 12-years old.

Princess is as confident as any member of the royal family. Her foster mom says, “She waltzed into our home with our two Standard Poodles, wagged her tail, and settled right in as if she’d always lived here.” A calm, independent girl, Princess is happy being on her own, but she is also comfortable with humans, other dogs, and even cats. Affectionate and sweet-tempered, she will climb into your lap for petting, but isn’t clingy.

Princess is completely housebroken, knows how to use a doggie door, and is easy to groom. She is good on a leash and loves to go for walks, trotting along at a brisk pace, so she would be great for someone who walks for exercise. She does have some hearing loss, but has no trouble understanding what is expected of her, and her foster mom is teaching her hand signals.

Mocha

Mocha

Mocha is a Miniature Poodle, and is 11-years old.

Mocha, is a sweet girl whose energy and zest for life belie her chronological age. Mocha loves to go for a walk, play and run. She will dash out the door if she has a chance and extreme care must be taken when opening doors that lead to the outside.

Happy and healthy, Mocha gets along with the other dogs, and enjoys cuddling and lots of attention from her foster family. Unfortunately, Mocha has no ear leather, because her former person put rubber bands with ribbons on the leathers rather than in her hair. The rubber bands cut off the blood circulation, and Mocha’s ear leather had to be removed. Our wonderful groomer has allowed the hair to grow out, though, and fashioned it so that her ears look normal, and it hasn’t affected her hearing.

Because Mocha is a door dasher, we would not recommend her for a family with children or very active households.

Hannah

Hannah

Hannah is a Miniature Poodle, and she is 11-years old.

Hannah came to Florida Poodle Rescue when her person died. A quiet, calm girl who is happy to lie around in the house, she will come up to you for petting and back scratches, but isn’t persistent if you can’t give her your undivided attention.

Hannah is fully house trained and walks well on a leash. She gets along with other dogs, but doesn’t play with them or seem interested in them, and she might be happiest as an only child. And if you want a little girl who will sleep in your bed with you, Hannah fits the bill.
